Currently, there are several projects open to students, initially as "Diplomarbeit". Some may later be continued with work towards a doctoral dissertation. The techniques to be used include bioacoustical measurements, electrophysiological recordings, and basic anatomical methods.

The follwing topics are available:

  • Measurment of otoacoustic emissions from the ears of gerbils, bats and humans. Aim is to understand active sensory processing in the cochlea.
    (Supervisor: Kössl)
  • Investigation of time processing in the auditory system of gerbils and bats with neuropharmacological and electrophysiological techniques.
    (Supervisor:  Kössl)
  • Study of  ontogenetic changes of neuronal circuits that process time in young bats.
    (Supervisor:  Kössl)
  • Otoacoustic emissions from bushcricket ears: pharmacological tests.
    (Supervisors:  KösslSeyfarth)
  • Extracellular recordings from the acoustic nerve of bushcrickets and tests with various pharmacological substances.
    (Supervisors: SeyfarthKössl)
  • Investigation of neuronal correlates of tinnitus in the gerbil brain with electrophysiological, neuropharmacological and behavioural techniques.
    (Supervisors:  KösslGaese)
  • Investigating the effect of behavioural and sensory context on the perception of sound in humans (psychophysics).
    (Supervisor: Gaese, see details)
  • Investigating brain activity during active hearing in rodents (electrophysiology and behavioural control).
    (Supervisor: Gaese, see details)
  • Studying the effects of genetic engineering in the auditory system of rodents.
    (Supervisor: Gaese, see details)
