Between 60 and 70 students graduate each year with a doctorate from the Faculty of Law. Also over the last ten years, 38 researchers completed their Habilitation degree. This places the Faculty in the upper tier of the national rankings. Prizes are awarded to the authors of the best doctoral theses. These include the Baker & McKenzie Prize (commercial law), the Walter Kolb Memorial Prize and the Werner Pünder Prize (for works on freedom and totalitarianism).

The Faculty also encourages junior researchers through research schools, e.g. the International Max Planck Research School for Comparative Legal History, which awarded studentships to researchers from Germany and across Europe. The Faculty also co-hosts, in conjunction with the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, the interdisciplinary research school: Law and Economics of Money and Finance.

The Faculty also seeks to foster outstanding early career researchers. It has established new positions which allow the holder to pursue their own teaching and research agenda. One of these was converted to a junior professorship. Other junior professorships have followed in Law and Economics and in European Insurance Law.
